I remember reading this a few years ago, but WOW does it resonate again. Today I took my own 9 year old outlier to take the AMC8 at a middle school across town, and was absolutely greeted with an air of "oh, so YOU'RE the mom we were expecting." If you knew me at all, you'd know the very idea that *I* would push or even choose math as his interest/ability is laughable. In the intervening years since I first came across this article, I've used the line "we let him drive the bus" countless times, so now I know who to credit with giving me that useful phrase, but more importantly, frame of mind!
